Underwater Modems

To deploy an underwater network, we require an underwater modem at each network node.

The Unet-2 software-defined modem [1] was developed for underwater networking research as part of the Unet project. Its primary design goal was flexibility, allowing various modulation schemes, forward error correction codes, and network protocols to be tested at sea. The modem supports multiple modulation schemes and protocols to be used during a single deployment, and is able to collect detailed logs of all communication activity during a deployment. It provides accurate control over transmission and reception timings, a powerful Java/Groovy API to access low-level functionality and a MATLAB toolbox to interface with the modem for signal analysis. Although the Unet-2 modem developed as part of the Unet project is an obvious candidate to use for UnetStack-based underwater network deployments, other underwater modems may also be used in networks. A modem driver imlpementing the Physical service is required to support the modem.

Manufacturer Modem Remarks
subnero Unet-2 modem The Unet-2 modem was developed for flexibility and extensibility, and fully supports UnetStack, including DATA/CONTROL channels, adaptive modulation/FEC, arbitrary waveform support and the software-defined modem (Baseband) service.
evologics WiSE-edition modem The WiSE-edition modem for developers supports basic UnetStack functionality at the network layers. Only CONTROL channel is supported. The software-defined modem (Baseband) service is not supported.

Network Gateways

A Seaweb gateway agent was developed to integrate the Unet network with a Seaweb network from the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). The integration was tested and demonstrated during the MISSION 2013 experiment in Singapore. Should you have an interest in this gateway agent, please contact ARL.
